Lonesome Cold Weather: New Music!

from Gerda Suzanna Vegt
Dear Noah,

I hear it is unseasonably cold in Wisconsin right now. To help bear the cold, here are a few things to things to listen to that will warm your autumnal spirit. Cheers, to warmer hearts.

Dinner Belles
They sound like what DAWES would sound like if DAWES weren't such woodsy bros. You know why? Because Dinner Belles are not woodsy bros, they have women in their band. Good for them! Also, points from being from Canada. No one out-woods the Canadians.
Elliot Brood
Speaking of Canada, here's a band I enjoy very much. They're called Elliot Brood. They're a bunch of old cats from Canada who have been doing hip folk for about five years. I once remembered that they described themselves as Death-Folk. Last time I saw them was at SXSW when a woman who told stories on overhead projectors open for them. The room was brimming with excitement and support for these guys. I remember being told that their music helped fellow Canucks get through the long snowy drifts in the winter. Boy, don't I know how that feels.

Sharon Von Etten
Aside from having a very attractive myspace photo, Sharon Von Etten has managed to put out some great hits. Her lyrics are spare, and she paces melodies very slowly. She's got a low tremble in her voice that make you feel like its going to break at any moment. She's also touring with Jose Gonzales led supergroup Junip. Probably the only time you'll get to see her this year unless you move to Brooklyn. And we know you don't want to.
When I think about it, Sharon Von Etten kind of sounds like a less devestating Sybille Baier. Sybille Baier is a german singer songwriter who recorded "The Colour Green" in the 70's in the US. The recording faded into obscurity for thirty odd years before it was rediscovered and reissued by Orange Twin in 2006. The melodies evoke an intense haunted intimacy and the lyrics seems to linger from verse to verse.

Probably a song to isten to while you drink.
So, have a great time with these songs. And find some yourself some rest.

Sincerely,

Herald
